Manchester Conservatives are deeply concerned by the recent comments made by Lucy Powell MP, in which she accused others of “chasing the dog whistle” in relation to grooming gangs. We have listened to and engaged with individuals and communities directly affected by these remarks, and it is clear that her words have caused significant hurt and anger.
Such comments are not only insensitive but also risk deepening divisions within our society—undermining the very efforts many of us work hard to strengthen. Whether intentional or not, Ms Powell’s statement has had a profoundly negative impact on those who bear the brunt of this type of rhetoric.
As a political party committed to fairness, respect, and accountability, we believe it is vital to respond swiftly and decisively. Elected representatives have a duty to use their platform with care and to ensure their words foster understanding rather than division. When they fall short, there must be consequences.
Research consistently shows that divisive language from public figures can inflame social tensions and sow discord. Manchester Conservatives are committed to promoting unity and respect in our political discourse, and we believe Ms Powell’s comments represent a serious setback to those aims.
Through this petition, we are calling for Lucy Powell’s immediate resignation. Doing so would demonstrate a commitment to accountability and send a clear message that there is no place for language that alienates and marginalizes communities. We urge all who share our commitment to a respectful, inclusive, and just society to support this call for action.
