Caroline Healy, Conservative Party candidate for Manchester Gorton says early intervention is key as she visits Homeless Charity

The Conservative candidate for Manchester Gorton said this week that homelessness is often a direct result of difficulty in childhood and the breakdown of family units.

Speaking after a recent visit to the Mustard Tree charity in Central Manchester, which provides care and support for local homeless people through soup kitchen, cheap clothes and bedding and cheap furniture for those just starting back in housing,  Caroline Healy set forward Conservative plans to deal with the problem including:

  • reforming the tax and benefits system to help families
  • to take Sure Start back to its original purpose of early intervention
  • to help families to rebalance their lives through affordable childcare, flexible working hours and flexible parental leave.

Speaking after her visit to the Charity in Ancoats, Caroline Healy said:

"I know from my experience as a school teacher that home-life is one of the biggest factors in determining how a child will end up in adulthood.

I firmly believe that if we can make a child's start in life the best it can possibly be then we are on the way to ending the vicious cycle of crime, drugs, prison, poverty, homelessness and eventually becoming disaffected from our society that are the hallmarks of homelessness."
